Hytale Server Mods & Plugins Troubleshooting

Custom mods and plugins allow you to expand and personalize your Hytale server, but incorrect setups can quickly lead to crashes or startup errors. Many issues stem from simple mistakes such as duplicate files, missing requirements, or incompatible mods. In this Apex Hosting guide, we’ll walk through the most common mod and plugin problems and explain how to fix them so you can keep your server running smoothly 👏

Duplicated Mods / Plugins

One of the most common problems when running a modded Hytale server is having duplicate mod or plugin files installed. This usually happens when updating a mod and the older version isn’t removed, or when the same file is uploaded more than once. When duplicates are present, the server will fail to start or load mods correctly. This often results in the following error message:

[HytaleServer] Failed to boot HytaleServer!
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Tried to load duplicate plugin

Fix: Delete any duplicated mod or plugin files from Modbox or the FTP File Access area.

Missing Dependencies

Some Hytale mods and plugins require additional files, known as dependencies, to function properly. These are usually listed on the mod’s download page or documentation. If a dependency is missing, the server may refuse to start or the mod may not work as expected.

Fix: Download and install all required dependencies alongside the main mod or plugin.

  • Check the mod or plugin description to confirm which dependencies are required.
  • Download each dependency listed by the developer.
  • Upload the dependency files to the same mods directory as the main mod.
  • Restart the server to apply the changes.

Conflicting Mods / Plugins

In some cases, two mods or plugins may conflict with one another, especially if they modify the same gameplay systems or mechanics. This can cause crashes, broken features, or unexpected behavior on the server. Developers may sometimes list known conflicts in their documentation.

Fix: Disable or remove mods one at a time to identify which file is causing the conflict.

  • Stop the server from the Apex Hosting panel.
  • Remove or temporarily disable one mod or plugin.
  • Start the server and check if the issue persists.
  • Repeat the process until the conflicting mod or plugin is identified.

IP / Port Setup

Some mods or plugins require you to configure an IP address or port, such as live map viewers or other web-based features. A common default port is 8080, but this should be changed to a free port close to your server’s main port. For example, if your server uses port 25001, you could use 25005. Avoid using addresses like 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0, as these can cause connectivity issues. Always use your server’s public IP address.

Fix: Open the mod or plugin configuration file, update the IP address and port, save the file, then restart the server to test the changes.

Additional Troubleshooting

Because Hytale is still in Early Access, uncommon or unexpected issues may occasionally occur. Keeping all mods and plugins updated helps reduce compatibility problems. If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, contacting the mod or plugin developer may help, as you could be experiencing an unreported bug.
